Preparations for Halloween were always hectic.

Candy, decorations (they only ever stayed up for a few days so what even), carving pumpkins (sorry love) and then getting little costumes for their ovine horde ready (yes, this included Atalys and Ovejita this time)…

The insanity never ended.

So when it was time for the tradition of them watching a movie (where he would always end up in his partner’s arms, hiding his face or in a pillow because those things on screen were scary!) he had the bowl of popcorn ready.

(Well, popcorn and anything else that was considered normal for standard ‘stay at home’ movie fare.)

This year’s ~~sacrifice~~ offering to the movie gods was something called ‘The Shrine’.

“Even from the title I’m already getting the heebie-jeebies,” he chattered as he reached for a handful of popcorn and had the pillow ready for hiding behind!

Memo went all out when it came for decorating for holidays. All holidays, even the ones that he didn’t really celebrate. He always had plans, themes, the Cricut was being worked until it smoked, there were blueprints, outlines, and Pinterest boards aplenty.

He let Alex handle the carving of the pumpkins and made sure all the windows were open and the flat was exquisitely ventilated during those trying times.

“It’s really good,” Memo promised, settling down on his little corner of the couch. He had one up on Alex because he’d already seen this movie a couple of times. “One of my favorites.”

His threshold for Fake Fear had gone up in recent years. He did not want to think on why that was.

The movie opened on what appeared to be a ritual sacrifice by a group of cloaked individuals on one poor, sad, crying man; his arms and legs had been nailed down rather viciously, and he was begging to be free.

“Oh my god don’t tell me they’re going to do the—” he trailed off, squealing as he quickly and immediately hid his face in his partner’s shoulder as the crying only got even louder.

For all that was worth, he was still terrified of most gore. Could anyone blame him, though?

He couldn’t blot out the pathetic crying, the begging, the wailing coming from the screen—was the sound turned up that high? He couldn’t remember.

Where was the popcorn?!

From the point of view of the poor, tortured individual, something dark and heavy gets laid over his eyes.

Then it cuts to a woman sitting at a desk, the sterilized gray of an office space around her.

“It’s safe, now,” Memo said, nuzzling into Alex’s hair, “there won’t be anything gross for a while.”

The woman is a journalist who wants to travel to a remote Kalosian village where a string of Unovan backpackers have all up and vanished. Her boss wants her to cover something boring and pedestrian.

“Here,” Memo said, reaching for the bowl of popcorn and setting it on the arm of the couch behind Alex.

Just as he was about to run out of the room screaming, he heard the scene change, and he looked up in time to see that it was now a boring old office setting.

“Y-you know,” he breathed quietly (secretly extremely thankful that his partner was nearby for immediate security cuddles) as he looked up.

“Whoever ends up ch-chasing the bad guy i-in these movies tends to… get way m-more than what th-they asked for,” he chatted, grabbing a handful of popcorn and stuffing it into his mouth to keep him busy. At least the salty flavor would keep him distracted from all the creepy, heebie-jeebie noises that were coming from the movie that was playing on the screen…

Memo makes a noise and reaches for the remote, pausing it. “Do you want me to tell you when the scary parts are about to happen?” he asks, the thought suddenly occurring to him.

He then momentarily turned his attention to the television, and shook his fist.

“You butts better be careful, you don’t know what the fuck you’re all getting yourselves into!” he warned them before returning his attention to his human pillow and feeding him a little popcorn.

“Yes, please,” he begged quietly, his gaze never leaving his partner’s eyes.

‘I want to go home,’ the specter says, ‘please, help me.’

She blinks, and he’s gone.

“It’s just the movie, baby,” Memo said, trying really really hard to not laugh at Alex. He pulled the larger man further into his lap, the best weighted blanket. “If you’re gonna get too scared we can stop.” There was just a little bit of a dare in the words.

The scene changes to somewhere in the middle of nowhere, Kalos. Thick green forests swathe an unpaved road as the three main characters drive a dinky little car through the woods. They peer out the windows at the ominous, looming trees.

…the way he said it and the way he stared into Memo’s eyes were two different things, though.

“I-if I give up now, th-then I’ve lost!” he continued as he returned his attention to the movie on the screen. “I’m gonna tough it out…”

(He didn’t finish the rest of the sentence, though.)

Looking back at the screen, he could tell that there was something coming up.

“I s-swear if something just comes running out of th-those trees…”
